WLAN coverage for a motor engine production line
Sector
Automobiles Industry
Project details
The project’s goal was the complete WLAN coverage of newly erected manufacturing premises in order to wirelessly connect various mobile end devices (inter alia handheld scanners and forklift terminals) to the central production control system and logistics. Due to the fact that the controlling of the production line unmanned transport systems is also carried out over the WLAN, there were demanding requirements to fulfill.
The preliminary planning of the WLAN installation and the choice of the appropriate antennas took place on basis of the blueprints of the newly erected building as well as of a detailed analysis of the application-specific requirements (Data Load, required Bandwidth, Availability). A Redundancy concept, responsible for the maintenance of the RF coverage in case of AP or Backbone Switches’ failure, was also part of the WLAN installation. The correctness of the planning was confirmed by intensive operational measurement testing in the new installation.
For a secure and reliable connection of the different, partially legacy devices, a security concept was proposed and the cooperation between the WLAN infrastructure and the terminal equipment verified by means of interoperability tests. The optimal parameterization was here attended to, in order to achieve short roaming times.
Basic parameters for the success of the project were:
- Preliminary planning of the WLAN coverage with provisioning for future modifications (e.g. rack growth, production capacity increase),
- Redundancy concept to guarantee high availability,
- Security concept, allowing both an adequate security and an integration of legacy devices
- Optimization of roaming latency for the unmanned transport systems
Time frame and T&M
The duration of the project from the begin of the planning till the finishing operational testing of the WLAN coverage was 5 months while adhering to offered budget frame of 20 man-days.
Deployed Technologies
Result
In cooperation with the customer the project was implemented successfully and on time. The operational system has been in use without interruption since the commissioning.
